Course Scheduling

Below is Caltech's scheduling policy, which exists primarily to reduce the number of course conflicts for students and facilitate their participation in extracurricular activities. Following these regular times is also necessary to receive an in-person final exam day/time assignment.

We understand there may be special courses that require exceptions to the following schedule; i.e., labs, but in general faculty are asked to adhere to the following:

• MWF courses start on the hour
• TR courses start at 9:00am; 10:30am; 1:00pm; and 2:30pm
• Please release students five minutes before the hour/half hour at the end of class so they may get to their next class on time
• Faculty are reminded to leave 12:00pm - 1:00pm and 4:00pm - 7:00pm open so that students have time for meals and can participate in sports and extracurricular activities
• Courses that meet for two or more hours at a time should be scheduled for Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday after 7:00pm; Monday night is reserved for Performing and Visual Arts (PVA) courses
• Organizational meetings may result in decisions to meet outside this schedule if it is advantageous to students as well as faculty and no in-person final exams day/time assignment is needed
